Another landmark in Indian Radiological Association was the introduction of ‘Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose Memorial Oration’ in the year 1948; a contribution to the advancement of Medical Radiology. Late Dr. Barceley, popularly known as “Father of British Radiology” was the first Orator in the year 1951. This oration was instituted after the cherished memory of one of the renowned Indian Bio-physics and the first honorary member of the association ‘Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose’. Every year, it is to be delivered at the Annual Congress of Radiology and is awarded to a renowned Radiologist.
In 1968, During 21st Annual Congress the Indian Radiological Association at Bangalore, a resolution moved by Dr. L. H. Athale to institute an oration in the name of ‘Dr. Diwan Chand Aggarwal Memorial Oration’. He contributed immensely to the association and was the President in the year 1957. The members of family of late Dr. Diwan Chand Aggarwal created an Endowment for the oration. It was started in the year 1969 and Dr. A. N. K. Menon of Madras delivered first Oration. Since then, many eminent Radiologists from India and all over the world delivered this oration.
In 1977, during 30th Annual Congress of IRA at Chandigarh ‘Dr. K.M. Rai Memorial Oration’ was instituted by the family members of late Dr. K.M. Rai. Due to his efforts, IRA got rebirth in 1946 and conducted 1st Annual Congress of Radiology at Madras and spurt of scientific activities in radiology started again. He was instrumental in starting Journal (IJR) in 1947 and was Associate Editor of the same. He was President of IRA in the year 1953. Dr. O. P. Bhardwaj of New Delhi delivered first Oration in the year 1978.
In order to commemorate the memory of Dr. M.L. Aggarwal for his contribution to radiology, Dr. M.L. Aggarwal Memorial Oration was started from the year 2004. The Family members of Dr. M.L. Aggarwal created a Corpus of Rs Two lakhs for the Oration.
IRIA has also approved to start two Orations in memory of late Dr. H. Satishchandra, and Dr. Kakalra Subbarao, past Presidents of IRIA.
In 1980, Dr. Ashok Mukherjee Award started was by IRA instituted by the family members of late Dr. Ashoke Mukherjee to encourage young Radiologist to take up new investigation and research in Radiology in India. Competitive scientific original work was selected and presented in Annual Congress by young radiologists and Committee appointed by President selects the paper and award is given to the radiologists every year on presentation. Dr. Pramod Kolwadker of Nagpur was the first recipient of this award in the year 1979. Members with five years membership with age under 40 years as on 30th September desirous to contest for the above award, can send their application to IRIA HQ as per criteria of the award. As per rules, there are maximum three Contestants for Dr. Ashok Mukherjee Award. The Credential Committee will scrutinize the applications received for this award and select best three applications and recommend for presentation in the Dr. Ashok Mukherjee Award session. The awardee is presented a medal and certificate.
IRIA has also started Dr. Kishor Taori Gold Medal for Best Competitive Papers. There are two competitive papers for this award in (i) Ultrasound and (ii) CT/MRI. Members with age under 40 years as on 30th September, desirous to contest for the above Award, can send their application and abstracts as per guidelines. The “Dr. Kishor Taori Gold Medal for Best Competitive Papers” is done in the session after Dr. Ashok Mukherjee Award during the Annual Conference of IRIA. As per rules, the Credential Committee of IRIA scrutinizes the applications for this award and select the best two candidates, who are be awarded after presenting their paper in person for a duration of 15 minutes in the Annual Conference of IRIA. The awardees are presented a medal and certificate.
Editors Award for Reviewer of IJRI: This award has been started for the best reviewer award in IJRI. Reviewer with maximum reviews in a calendar year with consistent good score for the review done as per the scoring system (September of previous year to August of next year).
Dr. G.R. Jankharia Best Paper Award has been started in IJRI with corpus fund of Rs 5 lakhs. There are two prizes for Dr. G. R. Jankharia Best paper Award in IJRI- (i) First Prize of Rs 20,000/-, and (ii) Second Prize of Rs 10,000/-, and these are awarded during the inaugural function of Annual Conference of IRIA. The Editor-in-Chief, IJRI will recommend five research/Original/Review Articles/Pictorial Essays from the current year only, using all relevant statistics to justify the same, and send the list to Central Office, IRIA along with relevant documents latest by 30th September. These recommendations will be discussed by the Credential Committee for different Awards/Orations/Fellowships of IRIA/ICRI. The Credential Committee shall decide the names of two awardees.
